Only a restricted number of athletes belonging to the same designated training group is allowed to be at the club at the same time.
The required R2PP procedures and limits enforced on the training activities are reasonable and manageable for competitive athletes. Nevertheless, children and most of our recreational members will find the prescribed training routines to be quite different from their usual experiences and even the reasons they come to Sword Players in the fist place.
In addition to the fact that a considerable number of Sword Players members usually postpone their club membership for July and August, many members, including competitive athletes, are quite concerned about the Covid-19 situation in general and are not planning to return to the club until at least September.
As we normally have only me as a coach, and, in accordance with OFA R2PP and provincial regulations, if any of the participants of any designated training group is diagnosed with Covid-19, the whole club will be shut down and everyone will have to be self-isolated for 14 days. With more and more places and attractions to be opened in Ontario, the participants of the designated training groups and their family members will be potentially exposed to environments where the safety measures mandated by the OFA R2PP in Phases 1-4 are compromised. It is reasonable to expect to have a higher level of self discipline from the individuals who have fencing to be at their utmost priority. Others, understandably, will have more adventures outside of the Sword Players training hours, thus putting the club at risk of being completely shut down.
Considering all of the above and making sure that we all stay safe and healthy, I am making the difficult decision to keep the club closed for the months of July and August. I believe that by September the Covid-19 situation will be under more control, Ontario schools will be opened and we will be able to resume our practices more or less as usual.
Take care and have enjoyable Summer,
